Presidents Message-Spring 2003

Welcome to the spring edition of the GCVI Gazette.  This will be the final issue of the Gazette before the school's 150th Anniversary in May 2004.  I would like to start this message by thanking those of you who contributed to the Durrant Cane Scholarship Fund and I would like to announce that your Alumni Association has guaranteed the funding of all of the old scholarship funds and their names at 'GC.  We would be happy to accept any contributions to our scholarship fund.  These donations are tax deductible.

The plans for the 150th Anniversary are coming along well-we have planned a coffee house with 'GC talent, a sports day with a banquet, a golf tournament, a wine and cheese party, a tour of the school with assemblies and decade rooms, a dance, and a Sunday brunch. The Guelph West End Community Center has been chosen as the main venue for our Wine and Cheese party and our Dance.  This facility gives us a capacity of over 3,000 people for these two events.

A small core group of volunteers has been working hard on the plans for 2004 but we need more people to volunteer for this huge event.  Please help us by being a sponsor, donating a door prize, researching archives, donating memorabilia, writing down your reflections of your time at the school, or by joining one of the committees that we have organized.  We are also looking for former band members to play in an alumni band.  I also urge you to contact your friends, family, and former classmates who are not members of the GCVI Alumni Association and ask them to join us by visiting our web site or by the other methods mentioned in this article. The 150th Anniversary Celebration of 'GC will prove to be the social highlight of Guelph in 2004-please respond quickly when we send your registration and ticket information to avoid disappointment.  As always, please send your comments, suggestions, and reflections to me at robert.hohenadel@bell.ca or c/o GCVI, 155 Paisley Street, Guelph, ON  N1H 2P3 or (519)824-9800ext.491.  Bob Hohenadel, Class of 74

In Memory - Marjorie Black

Marj was on the Alumni Executive as our Secretary.  She passed away on October 25, 2002 from Cancer.  She and husband Don were married more than 58 years and was mother to Barba and Drew. Marj celebrated life and was an inspiration to us all.  She brought to the executive a wealth of alumni knowledge from classmates young and old to a connection with our school history.  Her dedication to the G.C.V.I. Alumni was close to her heart.  We thank you Marj for being a part of our lives.

ATTENTION GCVI GRADS of the 50s

A 50s Decade Committee has been formed to contact as many persons as possible who were at GCVI during the 50s to encourage them to attend the 150th Reunion in May 2004 and gather in the 50s Decade Room and at a reception.

HELP US LOCATE 50s PEOPLE

We need to know NAMES, ADDRESSES, PHONE, EMAIL(whatever is available) .

The email address is most valuable, if available, because of the economy and ease of communication as plans develop.

Send information to Bob Seim (GCVI 54) at email rdseim@uwaterloo.ca  (ADDRESS R.R. #2, West Montrose, ON   N0B 2V0: PHONE (519) 664-2854: FAX (519) 664-3054).

LAIRD/REID RING and DURRANT CANE RECIPIENTS

We are attempting to learn the whereabouts of as many former recipients of either the Laird/Reid Ring or Durrant Cane as possible. Our goal is to research the careers of these folks to review their life directions after High School. The information collected would be used for presentation in written/portfolio form at the Reunion. If you know any of these folks, and/or have any knowledge of their current addresses, careers, etc., please let us know.

THE G.C.V.I. GAZETTE 2003
The George Penfold Memorial Prize

This prize was established in 1906 and is now given to the student with the highest aggregate in Ontario Academic Credit courses.  It was originally set up by George Penfold, a coowner of the then very well-known local hardware storePenfold Hardware.  Mr. Penfold was quite anxious to encourage students to continue their education so he set up this prize which was initially worth five dollars.  Five dollars then was, of course, worth a great deal more than it is now.

After Mr. George Penfold's death his grandson, also George Penfold, born in 1916 and a graduate of the G.C.V.I. class of 1933, wished to see his grandfather's prize continued for by now it has been presented for the longest unbroken string of years of any award at the school.  He changed the amount of the prize, of course, and the award has been presented every year to the present though as 2002 it has been funded by the G.C.V.I. Alumni Association.

Grandson George Penfold was a very active G.C.V.I. student.  Among other activities he was an outstanding football player.  He also participated in the Drama Club where interestingly he was coached by Olive Freeman who later became the wife of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker.  After attending the University of Toronto, he worked at Household Finance Corporation but after World War II broke out he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force where he became an observer-navigator and spent much of his time in India, transporting supplies in support of Allied Forces in Burma.

After the war he returned to Household Finance Corporation.  He was also prominent in the Royal Canadian Air Force Association and took leading roles at both the local and national levels.  He was elected National President of the organization in 1964.  He was chosen to accompany the Minister of Veteran Affairs Hon. George Hees on a commemorative trip to Canadian cemeteries in Singapore, Rangoon, Hong Kong and Yokohama to pay honour to Canadian war casualties in the war against Japan.  He was also active in civic affairs locally.
